When asked by the President of Russia whether, as some Western media write, Gazprom has really suspended gas supplies to EU countries and “what is this really?”, Alexey Miller explained that they were “talking about additional supplies,” which Europe requested, and Gazprom fulfills all current obligations, as always, strictly. Miller said that the company intends to keep exports to the EU at minimum contract levels for at least the next month and a half.

“It’s not such a secret why Europe might unexpectedly need additional supplies: some European countries have already begun reversing Russian gas for Ukraine,” writes Kommersant special correspondent Andrei Kolesnikov. -And yesterday, at a meeting with Alexei Miller, Vladimir Putin made it clear: this will not work. In the end, Russia's national interests are much higher. At least - the national interests of Ukraine. And the national interests of the European Union, which, according to Vladimir Putin, apparently must first figure out what they really are.”

Russia has clarified the position it will adhere to during the new round of negotiations with the EU on gas and the Ukrainian problem, Kommersant reports in the same issue. Gazprom is ready to reduce production and lose part of its revenue in order to keep European consumers on a “cold ration” at least until winter, thereby preventing them from supplying reverse gas to Ukraine. At the same time, Gazprom is preparing an alternative to the EU as a sales market, agreeing with China on the supply of up to 100 billion cubic meters per year via the “western route”.
