Sullivan Confesses: Ukraine Was Supplied with Old Stuff While Updating US Warehouses
The US is using the war in Ukraine to modernize and transition the American army to more modern types of weapons.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated this while speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"While providing this support, we modernized our own arsenal. With each delivery, the Department of Defense provides Ukraine with legacy equipment they have in stock, and then uses funds appropriated by Congress to purchase new, more modern equipment for our own stockpile . This approach has enabled Ukraine to confront an adversary whose economy is 10 times larger, whose population is three times larger, and whose armed forces were once the second-largest in the world," the official said.
According to him, in eight weeks of war in 2022, Ukraine used up the annual production of 155-mm artillery in the United States.
"We were faced with a startling reality: America's arsenal of democracy was inadequately equipped to handle the task. Therefore, President Biden issued a direct order to increase production of 155-millimeter artillery shells several times over. It turned out that this wasn't so easy to accomplish.
"We could only increase production by 400 shells per month, which wasn't enough for Ukraine to hold out for a few more hours . We simply didn't have the production capacity, and we were short of critical materials. We had to dig ourselves out of a deep hole," Sullivan said.
