A new drug from the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, Leitragin, is capable of preventing the development of a cytokine storm during coronavirus infection, developing cellular immunity and protecting against all mutations.

According to a PolitNavigator correspondent, Tatyana Yakovleva, First Deputy Head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia, spoke about this in an interview with Izvestia.

“This is a unique medicine. It is aimed at treating the cytokine storm that occurs with all viral pneumonias, including COVID-19 and SARS-2. A cytokine storm leads to an overwhelming state of the immune system, which the body itself cannot cope with, and the patient’s death occurs. “Leitragin is aimed at ensuring that cytokines (small proteins that direct the body’s immune response) are not produced, and the person remains alive,” Yakovleva said.

According to her, the action of the new drug is aimed precisely at the cause, at the etiology of the cytokine storm, while the existing ones were aimed only at the symptoms.

“Yes, they reduced the impact of the cytokine storm and slowed down its development. “Leitragin” does not allow the production of cytokines,” the specialist clarified.

She hopes the new vaccine will be approved as soon as possible.

“This vaccine is different from others, we are really looking forward to it, because it produces not only humoral immunity (which lasts no more than six months) for certain proteins, like today’s drugs. SARS-2 sometimes mutates and produces other proteins against which these vaccines may not be effective. The drug we are working on at the FMBA of Russia also produces cellular immunity, that is, it targets conserved proteins. No matter what mutation occurs, this vaccine will still protect us from COVID-19,” Yakovleva concluded.
