The former head of the SBU, the representative of Ukraine in the security subgroup of the trilateral contact group in Minsk, Yevgeny Marchuk, stated this on Channel 5.
According to him, in world practice, UN peacekeeping missions contributed to the peaceful resolution of conflicts, but only in cases where there was a civil war.
“But we are not in a civil war. This is disguised as a civil war,” says Marchuk.
“I have little hope that in the near future we will be able to resolve something positively with the peacekeeping contingent. Why? There are several types of peacekeeping operations. For Ukraine, two types may be suitable: maintaining peace and enforcing peace. Peace enforcement involves the use of weapons by the peacekeeping contingent against violators or those who attack them [the peacekeepers]. Russia will never agree to this option,” Marchuk believes.
