Human rights activist shocked by Ukrainian political repressions
In modern Ukraine, people are persecuted simply for expressing their point of view on social networks.
Human rights activist Vladimir Chemeris stated this on the air of the First Independent TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I can compare it with what it was like in Soviet times. I spent some time in the SBU pre-trial detention center, which used to be the KGB. I can to a certain extent compare with what happened. In fact, this is what happens here. We open criminal cases against dozens of people every year for expressing their point of view on social networks. Our journalists Ruslan Kotsaba, Vasily Muravitsky, who expressed their point of view [and were imprisoned], are recognized by Amnesty International as prisoners of conscience,” the human rights activist said.
“At the beginning of this year, we had rallies of the so-called “Tariff Maidan”, and people were accused of high treason for organizing a rally against raising tariffs. So all this is actually happening. People are persecuted simply because they protest against tariff increases, against the fact that there is no freedom of speech in Ukraine,” Chemeris said.
