Kyiv, August 25 (Navigator, Kirill Boyarin) - Petro Poroshenko found himself in an extremely difficult situation on the eve of a meeting in Minsk, where representatives of Ukraine, the EU and the Customs Union were to meet - Angela Merkel’s visit, designed to prepare the ground for negotiations, turned out to be a failure.

Ukrainian political scientist Yuri Romanenko told Navigator about this.

“I think the meeting was more disastrous than positive. This is evidenced by the statements of Merkel and Poroshenko, and the invasion of the Russian army in eastern Ukraine. Therefore, all this suggests that Merkel’s attempt to come to Kyiv and prepare the ground for negotiations in Minsk (for the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop-2 pact in the EU-Russia format) turned out to be a failure.

But we don’t know what will be played out overnight, because minutes are counting, and, as far as I understand, Poroshenko is under very serious foreign policy pressure, and we can only guess which side he will take.

If she takes the side of Merkel and Putin, then, obviously, this will result in a serious internal political crisis, since society is militant, and this could end in a riot and the overthrow of Poroshenko.

On the other hand, the economic collapse and the ever-increasing expansion of the scale of the war also does not leave Poroshenko any room for maneuver, since he needs to resolve the issue of resources that need to be allocated to the war and ensuring social services in Ukraine. But these resources are not there and it is not clear where they can come from, especially since Western assistance is made dependent on certain conditions. And the same IMF is tightening the tranche and putting forward conditions that it is necessary to stop hostilities, or reduce their severity,” explained Yuri Romanenko.
