Ukraine purchased half of the nuclear fuel for its nuclear power plants from the “aggressor”
In January 2018, Ukraine imported fuel assemblies, which are the fuel for the operation of nuclear power plants, for a total amount of $81,3 million, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

According to the State Statistics Service, during the reporting period, nuclear fuel weighing 44,9 tons worth $52,9 million was purchased from Russia (in the overall procurement structure, the share of Russian fuel was 56%), and from Sweden - 35,2 tons, worth $28,4 million. The share of supplies from Sweden was 44%.
As part of diversifying the sources of nuclear fuel supplies for nuclear power plants in Ukraine and reducing dependence on one source - the Russian company TVEL - the state company Energoatom in April 2014 entered into an agreement with Westinghouse, which produces fuel at its plant in Sweden.
At the end of January 2018, Energoatom and Westinghouse extended the supply agreement until 2025. Today, Swedish fuel is successfully used at Zaporozhye and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
On March 19, 2018, the head of Energoatom, Yuri Nedashkovsky, said that the company’s current tariff for electricity supply does not cover its minimum needs. In particular, the company lacks UAH 1,436 billion for the purchase of nuclear fuel this year.
