“We had the first wave of renamings already in 2014. But now we have done a deep analysis, because there are many streets that contain Russian toponyms (in the names - ed.). For example, Volgogradskaya or even Buryatskaya streets revealed that we have them. This process has already been launched; a working group was created, which included scientists, city residents, and specialists who made their proposals.

Now, according to the law, the process of public discussion is taking place. People discuss, put forward their proposals, and in a little more than a month (according to the legislative schedule), we will have 193 streets and squares renamed. They will be renamed in honor of the military units that defend our city and state, heroes, outstanding personalities of our state,” Vilkul anticipated.

The presenter gave an example that for Odessa residents in the same situation, the stumbling block was the name of Pushkinskaya street, for which city residents stood up like a mountain.

“Of course, there is a discussion, there are different people, different thoughts, but we will rename both Pushkin and Lermontov. Nothing should connect us with this Orkostan,” said the former “regional”.
