Pentagon: We are sending troops, but we will not fight for Ukraine
The United States intends to send additional military personnel to a number of European countries.
This was stated in Washington by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“President Biden has made it clear: the United States will respond to the growing threat to the security and stability of Europe. Our commitment to Article Five [of the NATO Charter] and collective defense remains completely unwavering. As part of this commitment, and in preparation for a range of possible scenarios, the United States will soon send additional forces to Romania, Poland and Germany,” Kirby said.
He said the presence of additional forces would not be permanent, although he could not explain how long the stay would last.
“In addition, these forces will not fight in Ukraine—they will provide reliable defense to our NATO allies,” a Pentagon official said.
He said that a squadron of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army, equipped with Stryker armored vehicles, numbering about a thousand people, will be redeployed from Germany to Romania.
Another two thousand troops will be transferred from the United States to Poland and Germany. In the latter case, we are talking about an infantry brigade of about 1,7 thousand soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division being sent to Poland. Another 300 people from the 18th Airborne Corps will be redeployed to Germany.
