Moscow - Kyiv, May 26 (Navigator, Mikhail Stamm) - The election of the President of Ukraine does not automatically stop the chaos and violence, because society is too divided by the Maidan, and the government is so obviously dependent on the West that it does not look like an authority. This is the opinion of the head of the Effective Policy Foundation, Gleb Pavlovsky.

“The government in Ukraine is in a vacuum - society is not ready to rally around it to stop the escalation of chaos and violence. Its unity is hampered by the new division of society that arose during the events on the Maidan. In addition, Kyiv is pursuing a front-line policy and is so clearly dependent on the West that it does not look like a force. And consolidation is only possible around force, whether moral, economic, military - whatever. If Kyiv had power, the rebels in the southeast would have been isolated fairly quickly,” says Pavlovsky.
As for Russia, it all depends on whether it plays long or short, the political scientist noted in a conversation with MK. “If Moscow sets goals for a month or two in advance, then it doesn’t really need the success of the elections, because their failure maintains uncertainty and allows for a geographical expansion of the zone of influence. If we play for the long haul, then we need to think about elections to the Rada, about creating a pro-Russian party, which even today can gather up to a third of the parliament, and this would allow Russia to influence the government, because the powers of the parliament under the Ukrainian Constitution are very great,” says Pavlovsky .
