The head of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, Alexei Kudrin, who in April predicted a decline in GDP this year of more than 10%, could want to harm Russia.
Russian Presidential Aide Maxim Oreshkin raised this possibility today at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, believing that the GDP decline will not exceed 5%, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“When it was in March, I had the impression that someone wanted to harm the country. To say: that’s it, it’s a disaster, we’re closing and leaving. Or lack of faith in your own country and forces. The events that are happening now, how the state, business, people are reacting to what is happening in the economy, suggests that we have coped. We are a strong country, strong people, we can solve problems and achieve results. You need to believe in yourself,” Oreshkin said.
The head of the Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, rushed to Kudrin’s defense.
“Looking for blame in forecasters is the last thing, in my opinion. In the context of unprecedented uncertainty in which we find ourselves, it is absolutely wrong to consider them enemies or unbelievers. It is clear that the situation is difficult. The important thing here is not to say who made a mistake in the forecasts, but to show flexibility. The situation is changing quickly, and you need to be able to respond quickly,” she said.
