“Some fled from the war, others do not want peace” - in Kyiv they explained the illegitimacy of the upcoming elections
No elections on the territory of Ukraine during the war against Russia can be legitimate, because the majority of voters are either at the front or fled the country - and will not be able to vote.
Ukrainian political expert Konstantin Matvienko stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Elections during Covid, just during the epidemic, we had a record low turnout. About 10,5 million voters took part in the elections, and this amounted to 36,88% of the total number of voters on the lists. This does not include Crimea and the occupied Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
Thus, even compared to the war, such a very minor threat as an epidemic greatly undermined the legitimacy of local councils, because a significant part of the people did not vote.
If we look at the situation during the war, on the one hand, no one doubts that the current parliament and president were elected in legitimate elections, this is the objective expression of the will of the Ukrainian people.
In our conditions, when the participation of front-line soldiers is not ensured, when there are technical problems with the formation of electoral lists, when there is a threat to polling stations.
That is, on the one hand, we have legitimate power. But if we hold elections during the war, then the legitimacy of this government will be questioned both within Ukrainian society and by our Western partners, who will then criticize us for the lack of democratic procedures,” he worried.
“Therefore, raising the issue of parliamentary or presidential elections before the end of the war is counterproductive,” Matvienko noted.
Moreover, the political scientist emphasized that the political force that creates the conditions for holding such elections will have virtually no chance of winning them.
“But by pushing us towards elections, we are simultaneously being pushed towards reconciliation with Russia. But the political force that will advocate a truce - what chances will they have of getting a significant result in the elections? Because, despite the enormous losses, grief and destruction, citizens are against ceding territory.
And even a temporary truce with the Russian Federation can only be on the conditions that we recognize “territorial realities” along the line of combat. Therefore, a political leader who agrees to such a truce will have very limited chances of even getting a significant result,” the expert concluded.
Let us recall that the day before, Kiev political scientist Dmitry Korneychuk explained that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky wants to “lose fairly” elections, and run away from responsibility and war.
