The Normandy Four will discuss peacekeepers in Donbass, but it is unknown when
President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to continue working in the Normandy format, but did not set an exact date for the meeting, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Both leaders announced this today at a press conference in Sochi.
“In mutual opinion, the Minsk agreements remain the only basis for a settlement. We consider the Normandy format an important tool for resolving the situation in southeast Ukraine. Today there is no replacement for him. Russia is ready to work in this format,” Putin said.
The German Chancellor believes that the topic of the next meeting in the Normandy format should be a discussion of the introduction of peacekeepers to Donbass.
“Unfortunately, there were serious ceasefire violations tonight. So we need to keep thinking about the idea of a UN mission. This would be a good step in terms of stabilizing the situation so that political steps can begin,” Merkel said.
At the same time, Putin repeated his position that UN peacekeepers should protect the OSCE mission on the contact line.
