“Both OSCE observers and Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers perform a daily ritual: as soon as darkness envelops the city, the observers slam their laptops shut, get into their blue and white Toyotas, and disappear from the line of combat contact. At the same time, the soldiers take out their weapons and the “disco” begins,” American reporter Andrew Kramer visited Avdievka and shared with New York Times readers' impressions.

“We call them deaf, dumb and blind,” says a nurse whose nickname is Romashka. “We’ve never seen them here at night,” says Tatyana Petrova, a local resident.

Sitting in their hotels, staring at the TV or monitor, they do not hear the thunder of large-caliber long-range guns. The issue of their use of binoculars is being seriously discussed at the government level. Observers were no longer allowed on the side of the anti-government rebels at all. “We should not be human shields,” the representative of the OSCE mission is trying to explain his position.

The publication says that during one day of the reporter’s business trip, observers missed the killing of three and the wounding of sixteen Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers.
