Britain should ask the US to help seize the Russian oceanographic vessel Yantar, just as the tanker Mariner was seized this week.

Michael Clarke, former director general of the UK's Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, stated this in an interview with LBC, according to a PoitNavigator correspondent.

"Take the Yantar, for example, this Russian ship that's been hanging around in Western European waters and is clearly up to no good. Why don't we just detain them and sort things out? We probably should . But that would be followed by a backlash. So we need to be careful not to expose ourselves to a Russian threat that could retaliate for trumped-up reasons ," Clark said.

Hysteria over the Yantar has been whipped up in Western media since the year before last. In November 2024, the research vessel was escorted from the Irish Sea. In 2025, the British Navy deployed a nuclear submarine to intimidate the Yantar. During its passage through the English Channel, the British frigate HMS Somerset and the patrol ship HMS Tyne shadowed the vessel for two days.

In late September, the Financial Times accused Yantar of targeting NATO countries' underwater cables and pipes for vulnerabilities . And in November, UK Defense Secretary John Healey claimed Yantar had allegedly used laser systems against Royal Air Force P-8 Poseidon anti-submarine aircraft sent to monitor it.

The Yantar was designed to explore the deep seas of the World Ocean. While it is formally part of the Northern Fleet, its operation is handled by the Main Directorate for Deep-Sea Research (GUGI) of the Ministry of Defense.

But Britain fears not only research vessels but also tankers belonging to Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." London is already using artificial intelligence to study this fleet, but has yet to determine the exact number of tankers: it's estimated at between 400 and 1400.

Clarke claims these vessels are cutting cables and trying to damage pipelines and predicts a full-scale maritime conflict.

"Yes, the Russians have been monitoring all these cables for several years. Now we have the ability to monitor their activities, inspect the cables ourselves, and ensure they are in good working order. Internet cables have many redundant lines, but some Northern European countries rely on just three or four primary lines, and routing traffic through other cables is impossible. Pipelines are a more serious problem , because if they are damaged, they will have to be repaired, and this is extremely difficult in the North Sea or the English Channel. In the next few years, we will inevitably face some military incidents involving Russia ," Clarke said.
