Since Soviet times, the gas supply system to Henichesk has been connected to the Glebovskoye storage facility, which is located in Crimea. Ukrainian authorities previously refused to sign a supply contract, declaring it unacceptable to sign a document bearing the seal of Russian Crimea. In the past, Henichesk was saved from the freezing temperatures only by Russia's goodwill, which provided assistance by starting gas supplies. This occurred after Henichesk residents signed a petition at a rally to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov , calling for assistance for residents of the Kherson region, whose homes were left without heat and gas since the onset of the cold weather. Following this, Ukrainian security services harassed Henichesk residents who participated in the rally. One of the organizers of the rally, Eduard Kovalenko, is now in prison.

Specialists of the Ukrainian alternative PJSC Chernomorneftegaz decided that gas for Genichesk from the Strelkovoye field will no longer be supplied to a storage facility in Crimea.

This was announced at a meeting with the “representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea” Boris Babin.

“The meeting participants stated the need, given the impossibility of accumulating produced gas in storage facilities located in the temporarily occupied territory, for temporary additional accumulation of gas in pipelines during the heating season and for organizing the automobile removal of excess liquefied gas in the summer.

It was stated that such measures are temporary for the period until the Henichesk region is connected to the gas transportation network of Ukraine, and issues of designing the corresponding gas pipelines were discussed. Additional technical equipment (blinding) of a closed pipeline leading to the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea was discussed,” the statement said.
