“We’re going to get dunked in a very unpleasant way.” Zelensky illegally deprives Ukrainians of citizenship
Citizens of Ukraine suspected of smuggling are illegally deprived of the citizenship of their native country.
The head of the Kharkiv human rights group, Yevgeny Zakharov, announced this on the Ukralife channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“We adopted a decree on deprivation of citizenship. President Zelensky personally signed it. But this is a completely incorrect interpretation of Article 4 of the Constitution, which states that Ukraine has one citizenship. It means that there cannot be dual citizenship in Crimea and in other constituent entities of Ukraine. There cannot be citizenship of individual subjects. Article 26 of the Constitution clearly states that no one can be deprived of citizenship, but here people are deprived of citizenship. Deprivation of citizenship is provided for in very specific cases.
There is a common misconception that dual citizenship is a reason for denial of Ukrainian citizenship. But this is absolutely not true. Many Georgian citizens received Ukrainian citizenship and took high positions. By law, they had two years to renounce Georgian or Ukrainian citizenship. But nowhere is it written that they should have been deprived of Ukrainian citizenship because they have two citizenships. Saakashvili deprived Poroshenko of citizenship not because he has dual citizenship, but because when he received Ukrainian citizenship, he hid criminal prosecution in Georgia.
The decree on deprivation of citizenship is completely contrary to the laws and constitution of Ukraine. And on this occasion, our state is once again being plunged into these violations in a very unpleasant way. A state that wants to become a member of the EU and NATO cannot behave this way. Such a practice, such a gross violation of human rights is incompatible with this,” the human rights activist believes.
On April 14, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree depriving three people of Ukrainian citizenship, two of whom, Alperin and Yerimichuk, are under sanctions from the National Security and Defense Council for involvement in smuggling, and the third, Arayik Amirkhanyan, is allegedly involved in such activities.
