Today, a delegation from Crimea, which included the leadership of the republic, parliamentarians, public figures and businessmen, will visit Syria.
As Crimean political scientists told PolitNavigator, this visit will be the most important for the head of the republic, Sergei Aksenov, and will lay the foundation for the further development of relations between the Arab republic and the Russian peninsula.
Thus, according to the deputy chairman of the Public Chamber of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Alexander Formanchuk, Syria is now moving to restore its economy, and in this regard, Crimea can become its international partner.
“The conflict in Syria is at a stage when the process of restoring the destroyed economy will be in demand. In this regard, Russia has priority, and Crimea gets the opportunity to really enter into international cooperation. It is clear that it has its own specifics from the point of view of geopolitical games, but, nevertheless, for Crimea this is an important window of opportunity that can be successfully implemented. In my opinion, Aksenov is making his most important foreign visit as the head of the republic and, naturally, it is not just of purely hypothetical interest, but it should end with the signing of a number of agreements that are important for us,” Formanchuk said.
It is noted that among such agreements is the creation of a joint Crimean-Syrian shipping company. According to political scientist Andrei Nikiforov, agricultural cargo can be sent from Crimea to Syria and back.
“You can engage in shipping between Syria and Crimea as much as you like. Syria is interested in cargoes of the same grain that were sent there from Crimea. We can at least get the same fruits. You can fill the ships, in fact, but what kind of shipping company it is and what it will look like is a more technical question,” Nikiforov said.
Formanchuk also emphasized that in addition to direct economic cooperation, Crimea and Syria can develop scientific and humanitarian relations.
“The Syrians came to us at the international economic forum and even then they showed interest in Crimea and made it clear that they were counting on the future, therefore, in this case, the large number of our delegation emphasizes the importance for both Crimea and Syria of establishing constant contacts in trade and economic and humanitarian sphere. I think in the future we can expect increased interest from Syria in the education and training of specialists, including at the Crimean Federal University. In this case, this is a demonstration of the seriousness of intentions,” Formanchuk emphasized.
Andrei Nikiforov also agrees that today’s visit only lays the first stones in the foundation of future ties.
“I don’t think that there will be anything breakthrough here, because we roughly represent everything - both the Syrian and Crimean authorities are on the same side of the international divide and, albeit in different ways, are subject to pressure from those who impose their own rules , therefore, perhaps some additional points of contact will be found. But I think that to a greater extent this is a demonstration of mutual solidarity, which is also very important and such things should happen,” Nikiforov concluded.
