Europe does not pursue a tough policy towards the Russian Federation, writes the Ukrainian Week magazine.

The publication laments that in the EU one can increasingly hear statements at different levels about the need to lift or soften anti-Russian sanctions and complains that Europe in the “Normandy Four” “repeats the mantra known from the reports of the OSCE SMM about the responsibility of both sides for violating the “silence regime.”
“The softness of Europe will by no means contribute to constructive dialogue or real achievements. A ceasefire cannot be directly resolved by the use of sanctions, and other levers of influence for Merkel and Macron over Putin are not yet visible. Just as the role of the new French President in the negotiation process is not visible. He briefly called the results of the telephone conversation “a direct dialogue for concrete actions”; there is no data yet on his own initiatives,” the magazine continues.
The article describes US policy as more effective for Ukraine, specifically complimenting US Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, who stated the need to provide Kyiv with American weapons. However, the author acknowledges that "for now, the process has not progressed beyond statements and talk."
