Ukrainian writer Sergei Zhadan, who actively supported the Maidan and the so-called ATO, in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “New Time” criticized the further tightening of legislation in favor of the Ukrainian language.

“We are fighting not for the Ukrainian language, but against the Russian language. Such a small substitution of concepts, but it changes virtually everything. Because many Ukrainian patriots who speak Russian find themselves in the role of outcasts. The country they support, for which they fight and are ready to die at the front, suddenly begins to fight with them. They suddenly find themselves in the role of people who must justify themselves and defend themselves. This is not a constructive position,” the writer believes.
“The language issue is a trump card that is taken out of the pocket every time when the government cannot respond to social or economic challenges. And now no one is talking about increasing the minimum wage and tariffs, or about the growth of the dollar, but everyone is talking about whether we will have language inspectors or not. It was like this under Yushchenko, under Yanukovych, now and it will continue to be like this until this issue is resolved,” says Zhadan.
