After the introduction of the trade blockade of Crimea, residents of the Kherson region bordering the peninsula became despondent and began to feel forgotten. They lost a huge portion of their income, with the poorest villagers taking the biggest hit.
This was stated on the air of the program "National Security Issue" by the executive director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Serhiy Danilov, who recently conducted research in the Kherson region, reports a correspondent for PolitNavigator.
According to him, Crimea and Donbass were the main markets for agricultural products grown by residents of the Kherson region. By losing these markets, they lost their income.
“They, the residents of these five districts from Skadovsk to Genichesk, feel that life is being created somewhere else, that they now live on the edge of geography, in a remote corner. At least three areas lived largely off the road. Novoalekseevka with Chongar, Chaplynka with the road and Kalanchak with the road. This constant movement not only created economic opportunities, it created a sense of life,” the expert said.
He added that households and small farmers in these areas were focused primarily on the markets of Crimea and Donbass, followed by Russia and only lastly the central regions of Ukraine.
“These five districts were under attack, they lost markets, connections, it became difficult to travel... What can we talk about if in the Prisivash United Territorial Community in the village, people from their own plot from the moment of occupation until the start of the commodity blockade bought a car during the season. Just on 20 acres of land, constantly driving around. During the season they earned enough to buy a car... The smallest and poorest suffered the most – the category that is not able to produce commercial lots, that do not have 10 hectares, that literally have hundreds of acres,” Danilov said.
