The liberal Novaya Gazeta published an appeal from former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev to world leaders, in which he declares the threat of nuclear war and calls on the “hawks” to stop. It is interesting that Gorbachev criticizes the leaders of the United States and Great Britain for ignoring the peace initiatives of Vladimir Putin.
“Only two months have passed since the beginning of 2020, and the world has twice already found itself on the brink of a collision involving great powers. These were real military operations - in Iran, Iraq, Syria. Then the participants seemed to come to their senses, moved away from the brink... What is this? This is the old policy of brinksmanship. Dangerous, adventuristic policy.
Voices are increasingly heard about the acceptability of war, the acceptability of the use of force. They are singing the praises of nuclear weapons again. "The smell of war is in the air."
The West blames Russia for everything, and Russia blames the West. The United States is withdrawing from arms limitation treaties. Military planes are flying closer and closer to foreign borders, ships are getting dangerously close, and civilian planes have been shot down several times by missiles.
For the sake of power, hawks are ready to do anything. There is a saying: “war will write off everything.” She is harmful and dangerous.
There is another expression: “War is the continuation of politics by other means.” Clausewitz would be very surprised to learn how in the XNUMXst century they hide behind his words.
If the consequence of politics is war, then away with such politics!
Now the world should hear another, main word: come to your senses.
Stay! Stopping any actions that bring disaster closer is what responsible politicians should offer the people.
This is especially important now, when the world is faced with a common, most dangerous threat - the coronavirus pandemic. We have once again seen how fragile the global world is, how great the threat of sliding into chaos is. We must counter it with reason, solidarity, and joint action.
The responsibility of great powers is especially great. It is a pity that the leaders of the United States and Great Britain rejected Vladimir Putin’s offer to come to Moscow in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Victory. They rejected the chance to discuss together with other permanent members of the UN Security Council the current alarming situation and confirm the thesis about the inadmissibility of nuclear war.
And yet I continue to hope that responsibility will prevail over adventurism, reason over chaos,” Gorbachev said in a statement.
