She stated this today at a joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi.
“We received very negative reports about what is happening with homosexuals in Chechnya, I asked Mr. President to exert his influence on preserving the rights of minorities. It is also important to protect the activities of the Jehovah's Witnesses organization in Russia,” Merkel said.
Novaya Gazeta reported on the alleged kidnappings of men of non-traditional sexual orientation in Chechnya. It was alleged that more than 100 men were detained in the republic, three were allegedly killed. The republican authorities reject such accusations.
