“Everyone has to contribute. Let Ukraine not expect that everyone around will solve its problems that only it can solve,” Angela Merkel said after meeting with the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic yesterday in Bratislava.
Kyiv should not assume, the chancellor is sure, that Brussels will take on Ukrainian debts for gas supplies from Russia. These words were spoken, writes an influential German newspaper, after the visit of EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger to Kyiv on October 20 to de-escalate the conflict.
Representatives of Kyiv and Moscow meet this Tuesday at talks mediated by the EU Commission in Brussels. The day before, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced agreement with Russia on a preferential temporary price of $385 per 1000 cubic meters. But Moscow is ready to resume gas supplies only after Ukraine pays off old debts.
