Lukashenko is shaking the EAEU to force Putin to a meeting
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is looking for any excuse to achieve a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is ignoring him. That is why he initiated today the convening of a summit of the heads of the member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Political scientist Bogdan Bezpalko told PolitNavigator about this.
“Lukashenko has an electoral cycle, elections are approaching. He needs money, and for this he needs to meet with Putin and beg for it. The Russian leadership considers the Belarusian president less and less adequate and capable of conducting any negotiations. Therefore, it simply stopped contacting him,” the expert said.
He drew attention to the fact that discussions of Russian-Belarusian relations have recently been taking place at the level of prime ministers Mikhail Mishustin and Sergei Rumas.
“Rumas behaves at least adequately. And it is impossible to discuss anything with Lukashenko after all these statements about the Great Patriotic War, about the position he was put in because of hydrocarbons. It becomes simply irrational to contact him,” Bezpalko noted.
In his opinion, Lukashenko wants to meet with Putin to “promise forty barrels of prisoners” and ask for money.
Moreover, the Belarusian president is not going to fulfill his promises.
Bezpalko is confident that the EAEU summit will not take place in the near future, since all participating countries are faced with serious problems.
“Now there is actually an emergency situation in the country. There is no time for Lukashenko with his wishes. He takes the epidemic lightly, but this is his business and his country. The rest of the EAEU leaders are busy with problems in their own countries,” the expert concluded.
Let us recall that Lukashenko expressed the idea of convening an EAEU summit today in a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The Belarusian leader instructed the Chairman of the EEC Board, Mikhail Myasnikovich, to work on this issue from each side and bring the discussed positions to them.
