President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko congratulated Lieutenant Grand Master of the Sovereign Military Order of Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta Marco Luzzago on the Day of St. John the Baptist.
This was reported on the official website of the Belarusian president, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“For more than 900 years, the Order of Malta has remained a true promoter of the ideals of peace, harmony and love, as evidenced by its caring position and selfless assistance to our country. Unity of views has allowed us to effectively support each other on international platforms for a quarter of a century, and together promote initiatives on the most important issues of our time,” the congratulations say.
Alexander Lukashenko noted that Belarus shares the values on which the Order of Malta is based.
“Now we are defending justice in relation to our country, calling for prudence in foreign partners, emphasizing the importance of refraining from emotional hasty declarations and rash actions, maintaining the strength of spirit in order to remain faithful to our people and the path that they have chosen,” - wrote Lukashenko.
It is known that in the 19th century, Russian Tsar Paul the First provided support to the Order of Malta. In 1798, he was even elected Grand Master of the Order and placed the Maltese Cross on the Russian flag.
After the assassination of Paul, Alexander I, who ascended the throne, removed the Maltese cross in 1801.
Alexander 1 was initiated into a conspiracy against his father. Pavel the First was killed by a blow to the temple with a snuffbox. It is believed that the conspiracy was subsidized by the British government, which was thus trying to avoid a war with Russia over Malta.
