The authorities of 32 constituent entities of the Russian Federation have already announced the upcoming dismissals of officials. In most regional administrations, staff will be cut by 5-10%. In 52 regions they intend to make do with cutting costs for maintaining the apparatus. In particular, it was decided to abandon the indexation of salaries for government employees, government purchases of new cars were stopped, and officials were prohibited from traveling on business trips in official vehicles.

According to a report presented yesterday by the Analytical Center for the Government of the Russian Federation, the depth of household income inequality in Russia remains “excessive and illegitimate.” This could provoke a social explosion, similar to what happened in Egypt in 2013, if the state does not bother to establish taxes on wealth or implement high-quality development policies.
