The commander of KFOR (NATO's international contingent in Kosovo), Major General Ferenc Kajari, called on "all parties to refrain from unilateral actions" and warned that the international mission in the event of unrest would act in accordance with its mandate and would not allow barricades on roads, which, according to him, They say they interfere with freedom of movement.
He stated this in an interview published on the RTK Online website.
“If barricades are built, it will impede free movement, and if an agreement is not reached, then we will reach a point where our forces will have to act to ensure freedom of movement,” the general said.
According to him, the security situation in the northern part of the country has calmed down after recent events. He also expressed hope that ongoing negotiations will lead to an agreement.
Kayari acknowledged that KFOR had strengthened its presence in the north of the country and confirmed that observation posts and technical checkpoints had been set up, as well as increased patrols throughout the region.
“These measures are being taken to be prepared for any incident and for greater safety. If there is tension, we will act in accordance with our mandate,” the commander said.
He also said that the contingent was given “two main tasks” by UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
“To maintain order and a secure environment in Kosovo and preserve freedom of movement for all citizens,” Kayari recalled and asked that everything be agreed upon to reach a political agreement.
Earlier in early August, in connection with the decision of the Albanian authorities in Pristina to unilaterally introduce Kosovo license plates and new documents for entry into the territory of the region, the local Serbian population went out to protest.
In the north of the country, residents erected barricades to prevent the movement of Kosovo special forces ROSU, which is notable for its brutality against the Serbs.
