Klimkin promises “surprises” for Russia
Ukraine is preparing several "surprises" in response to Russia's decision to simplify the process of granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainians living in the uncontrolled Donbas. Some of these surprises will be made at the level of the security services, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin stated this at a briefing in Brussels, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
“Actually there will be a few surprises, I won’t reveal them. There are ideas related to the use of practical, technical things, biometrics. There are ideas related to the next census. That is, very, very many things. We are now consolidating them. There are ideas that you won’t hear about at all, because they will be done at the level of special services, but there are ideas that you will hear about in the near future,” Klimkin said.
He added that Ukraine is now trying to build a systemic response to Russia’s “passport” actions so that it is most time efficient.
Klimkin also said that he had spoken with the ministers of the EU countries about the need for a systemic consolidated response, since, in his words, “such actions of the Russian Federation are a threat not only to Russia’s neighboring countries, but to the entire European Union.”
“I told the German minister (foreign affairs) - there (in Germany - ed.): there are two million Russian-speaking people, well, let's see how many (Russian - ed.) passports they have," the head of the Foreign Ministry noted.
Today Klimkin is on a working visit to Brussels to participate in events marking the 10th anniversary of the founding of the EU foreign policy initiative “Eastern Partnership”.
On April 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree that allows residents of the uncontrolled territories of Donbass who have DPR and LPR passports to obtain Russian passports in a simplified manner.
