Klitschko does not want to give the center of Kyiv to the Mejlis
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klitschko, proposed not to erect a monument to the victims of the expulsion of the Crimean Tatars in the Mariinsky Park opposite the government building, but to move it to a new park in Troenshchina - on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital.
Klitschko stated this at a jury meeting of the competition to determine the best idea for the architectural and spatial composition of the deportation monument.
“I can say one thing - this will be one more of many things in this park that will attract attention, but will not dominate. There in Mariinsky Park we have many monuments: a monument to a toad, a monument to Vatutin, there will also be a Crimean Tatar one - a lot of things,” Klitschko said.
As an alternative, he proposed dedicating an entire square to the deportation, but on the outskirts of the city.
“This will be the entire park, in which many accents can be made that can lead to history, culture, based on the ornamentation of the sidewalks. This park would have a much greater resonance than one particular building in the Mariinsky Park, where there are already many different sculptures,” Klitschko said.
The leaders of the extremist organization “Majlis”, banned in Russia, did not dare to object, but did not agree either. They want to go to Troyeshchyna and see the park, which is currently just being created. Deputy head of the Majlis Ilmi Umerov proposed the best option - both to create a Crimean Tatar park and to install a memorial sign in the Mariinsky.
