“We are ready to stop, but only where we are now. We will not betray the memory of the civilians and our comrades who died in January. We are for the path of peaceful negotiations. We demand that Kyiv sit down at the table and negotiate,” the heads of the DPR and LPR, Zakharchenko and Plotnitsky, said yesterday. “What did we hear in Minsk? They offer us, after they themselves unleashed another round of war, the demarcation line from September last year. For what? To shell our cities again? No, gentlemen, forget about it,” they say.
The Kremlin representative, who answered questions from TASS, made it clear that he understood the logic of the behavior of the DPR and LPR. “Against the backdrop of large-scale combat, their tough position is quite understandable,” he noted. The interlocutor recalled that Russian Ambassador Zurabov did a lot to persuade the militia to negotiate, but “in the current situation, any potential for influence has its limits.”
That is, Kyiv was asked to negotiate: either on unfavorable terms today, or on unpredictable terms tomorrow. Kiev is not yet ready for a compromise on someone else’s terms, but the internal political situation is heating up, and tomorrow today’s unfavorable conditions will seem like a generous offer. Especially if the militias fulfill their promises to reach the borders of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
