“Master of Transcarpathia”: It’s time to say goodbye to the concept “The West will help us”

It’s time for Ukraine to stop hoping for further Western help. This was stated by Verkhovna Rada deputy Viktor Baloga, whom the Ukrainian press called “the master of Transcarpathia.”

This is how Baloga commented on media publications that the EU was skeptical about the idea of ​​a “Marshall Plan” for Ukraine, previously advertised in Kyiv.

“We must finally say goodbye to the concept of “The West will help us.” Will not help. Neither West nor East. It’s just that in the modern world they don’t help the weak, they finish them off. In fact, there is more than one Marshall Plan lying under our feet. We just need to remove the schemes and those who control them. If we legalize amber, bring oil and gas production, alcohol and tobacco trafficking out of the shadows, bring order to customs, remove kickbacks, we will not need any IMF. And then it won’t be the Europeans who turn their noses up at us, but we will poke them at their own unfulfilled promises, such as the Budapest Memorandum,” said Baloga.

So far, Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in the post-Soviet space, the deputy admitted.

“I am ashamed that a country that has space technology, huge reserves of natural resources, has a high level of education of its citizens, lives poorer than those who do not have even half of this. I don’t want to offend anyone, but it’s a shame that today a Ukrainian receives a lower pension than a Belarusian, and our economy is weaker than the Armenian one. Although, in terms of our potential, we could easily compete with Germany and Poland, and not be equal to Kazakhstan.

And we will not become rich when the president travels to villages and cities to cut ribbons. And when will our workers from the Czech Republic, Russia and Poland begin to return to these villages and cities? Then I personally will believe that reforms are taking place in the country and the authorities are not indifferent to the people,” says Baloga.
