Fugitive Russian oppositionist Garry Kasparov, who lives in the United States, called on the West to strengthen sanctions against Russia so that the punishment would be felt not only by the elite, but also by the common population, who should be punished like the Germans and Japanese in 1945.

Kasparov voiced this statement at a forum in Vilnius.

Kasparov expressed the opinion that Western sanctions against Russia are “less than we wanted,” however, in 2014 it could have turned out that no sanctions against Moscow would have been introduced at all.

"This is less than desired, but more than expected. The sanctions adopted today are lenient... The Putin regime has adapted to these sanctions. Both the economy and the political class believe they are not fatal," he said, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.

Nevertheless, Kasparov assures, sanctions are necessary even in their current form, since they “attack Putin’s authority” (the fugitive liberal chose not to mention how this relates to the record rating of the Russian President).

“What did the sanctions do? They did not give immediate results. Or maybe they prevented even greater aggression? Because the question is not whether Putin will attack further - the question is when and where,” Kasparov intimidated the audience.

"Sanctions need to be tightened. Should sanctions be strictly personal? We hear from members of the Russian opposition: 'Only personal sanctions, the Russian people are innocent.' But the German people weren't guilty either! And the Japanese people weren't guilty either! But someone's doing all the work! ...So, was it just Putin and Shoigu who acted in Crimea?" Kasparov said.

“The annexation of Crimea should be a personal matter. You must understand that there will be a price for this... Responsibility for actions and inactions... Every nation deserves its own government,” the liberal emphasized.
