Canadian friends “dumped” Ukraine
Canada “conned” Ukraine into an agreement on a free trade zone that was beneficial for itself, while Ottawa is in no hurry to consider the issue of a visa-free regime.
TV presenter and political analyst Vyacheslav Pikhovshek stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“On July 11, 2016, another success was announced in Kyiv - the signing of a free trade agreement with Canada. Now you can analyze the result. This was another defeat for the Ukrainian authorities. If we analyze official data from the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine for the first half of 2016, Ukraine sold goods to Canada worth only $18 million. We were constantly told then about the growth of trade turnover, especially after the signing of this agreement.
But it would be worth looking at what Ukraine sells to Canada – non-ferrous metal scrap (about a third of Ukrainian exports), tanning extracts (8,9%) and fertilizers (4,3%). But Canada imported products with high added value to Ukraine. Oils, pharmaceutical products, processed fish and seafood,” the expert said.
“In other words, Ukraine was focused on exporting raw materials to Canada, and received goods in return. The ratio of exports to imports from Canada was one to seven. That is, Canada sells to Ukraine seven times more than it buys from Ukraine – 206 million versus 30 million dollars. And Canada has recently been demonstrating to Ukraine what other national interests are. Ottawa received a favorable agreement on a free trade zone from Kyiv, but “we’ll wait with visas,” the Canadians say, they are not ready yet,” Vyacheslav Pikhovshek summed up the disappointing result.
