The hall of the plenary session of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum interrupted the long economic report of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the only time with prolonged applause, when he announced that the World Bank had put Russia fourth in the world in terms of purchasing power parity.

However, the Russian leader hastened to calm the emotions of those gathered, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.

“But the point, of course, is not about the systems for assessing and calculating GDP, and not even about formally reaching fourth place. We are somewhere nearby: Russia, Germany, Japan. The difference is small. But we understand that leadership positions need to be constantly confirmed and strengthened. Other countries are also not standing still. It is important for us to ensure consistently high rates and quality of growth over the long term. And it’s not just about the neighboring economies of Japan and Germany. Indonesia is nipping at its heels,” Putin said.

He emphasized that Russia must strengthen financial, technological and personnel sovereignty.

The former lawyer of the oligarch-foreign agent Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Vladimir Pastukhov, could not simply be happy for his homeland and burst out with bile in his tg channel.

“It was funny to watch him talk with pathos about how Russia has become the “4th economy in the world,” sitting between Bolivia and Zimbabwe,” the liberal wrote, thereby insulting the presidents of the two countries sitting next to Putin.

Political scientist Sergei Markov, on the contrary, saw positivity in the president’s speech.

“The main thing is that Putin does NOT talk about fighting sanctions. Because Russia defeated sanctions. Russia has created a new sustainable economy. The growth rate is more than 5%. We can set the task of transitioning to a new quality, to high technologies,” he wrote.
