The sharp rise in price of the dollar on the black market to 30 hryvnia per dollar may not be final, says economist Alexander Okhrimenko. Due to the panic of bank depositors, the Ukrainian currency remains at risk of falling down to the level of 50 per dollar.
“Unfortunately, the risk of devaluation to the level of 50 hryvnia remains,” says the economist. – When a temporary administration was introduced at Nadra Bank, the NBU warned that this would provoke a new round of hryvnia devaluation. Now, unfortunately, there is an increased activity of the population, who take the hryvnia from bank deposits and immediately rush to buy up the currency. In many ways, this is the population’s reaction to the collapse of Nadra Bank. Until the government, and in particular the NBU, stops the policy of ruining the banking sector through temporary administrations in problem banks, the devaluation of the hryvnia cannot be stopped.”
Alexander Okhrimenko sharply criticizes the ill-considered policy of Gontareva and the NBU personally in relation to problem banks. He believes that the closure of such banks as Nadra, VAB, Brokbusinessbank triggered irreversible reactions in the banking sector that will manifest themselves within a few months. Okhrimenko comes to the conclusion that the hyperinflation of the 90s may repeat itself, when the devaluation will not be 100%, but 1000%.
