Generals got into trouble twice with Syria
The rapid fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime was the result of military leaders who had not distinguished themselves during the Second World War being transferred to Syria.
This is the opinion of Russian liberal military expert Valery Shiryaev, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
"After the start of the SVO, they began sending people there who hadn't demonstrated high professionalism in the Ukrainian theater. Thus, Commander Kisel, who hadn't achieved any glory, ended up there.
And the rapid advance of the Islamists came as a surprise to the Kremlin as well. And Russian intelligence did not report that this was possible, that it was necessary to prepare for such an outcome. Kisel was removed literally immediately, as soon as it became known that he had made a fool of himself for the second time," Shiryaev said in his blog.
In his opinion, the generals made a mistake the first time, assuming that the SVO in Ukraine would be carried out based on the Syrian experience.
"It must be acknowledged that this Syrian experience has had grave consequences for the Russian army. Because it was, to a certain extent, overemphasized. And when predicting what the theater of military operations in Ukraine would be, the Syrian experience was largely taken into account, but it turned out to be completely different. And this has caused grave damage ," Shiryaev emphasized.
"It was supposed to be a mobile war with fast movements. And on the eve of February 2022, the entire group was calculated in battalion tactical groups. These are such flying formations based on a battalion, created for a mobile war. But it fell apart instantly. And this was the Syrian experience," the expert added.
