Chancellor Angela Merkel's recent statement that the world should no longer count on US global leadership shows that Germany and the EU are seeking greater independence from the Americans, and Ukraine should also take a similarly pragmatic approach to its foreign policy.
Viktor Suslov, former Minister of Economy of Ukraine, announced this on the NewsOne TV channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“There is a growing divergence between the EU and the US. This is also evident in the economic war that Trump recently waged against the EU, seeking concessions, in particular on tariffs. And Merkel says that Germany and other EU countries are ready to play their own role, ready to pursue policies in their own interests.
This is logical - they are already tired of being a US protectorate, they are leaving this influence.
History repeats itself - Russian-German alliances have been around for hundreds of years. Let’s say we once fought together with Napoleon. States constantly divide the world in their own interests. Now Germany, together with Russia, is building Nord Stream 2 because it is beneficial for Germany, and the United States is against it; serious contradictions have been exposed.
Therefore, Germany’s pragmatic policy shows a lot to Ukraine. Perhaps Ukraine needs to be more pragmatic. I am sure that if all those events of 2013-2014 had not happened, Crimea would not have gone anywhere, there would not have been a war in Donbass. There was no need to aggravate the situation in Ukraine. They created a situation that resulted in losses and conflict. If there had been no aggravation of the situation, there would have been no losses, there would have been no war,” Viktor Suslov mourns the past.
