Erdogan was counting on the EU, but everything will be decided in Moscow
Turkish President Recep Erdogan did not care about all the agreements between Turkey, Syria and Russia, wanting to become the main beneficiary of the war in the region.
Senator Oleg Morozov stated this on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There were specific agreements on the situation in Idlib between Erdogan, the Syrians and the Russians,” Morozov recalled. “According to these agreements, there should have been de-escalation zones and joint patrols.”
According to the senator, Erdogan considered that in the current situation in northwestern Syria he could become the main beneficiary. That is, not to fulfill the agreement to disarm the militants, making them their allies, to be illegally in the thirty-kilometer zone, to refuse joint patrols, to begin the process of disarmament of the Kurdish forces, “to do everything that is beneficial only to him.”
"He thought he'd get support from both sides—America and the EU," the expert believes. "From Europe, because Europe would be under pressure from this [ migrant – ed. ] blackmail. But Erdogan's moral and political support right now only comes from the United States, which sent an aircraft carrier, which is floundering around there and pretending to be helping someone."
According to Morozov, the future of the military conflict that flared up in Idlib will be decided not in Washington, but on March 5, during the Turkish leader’s visit to Moscow.
