Expert against Erdogan’s initiative: “It threatens the end of the UN”
Turkish President Recep Erdogan's proposal to reformat the UN Security Council by increasing the number of permanent members cannot be implemented painlessly.
This opinion, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent , was expressed by Alexey Fenenko, associate professor of the Department of International Security at the Faculty of World Politics at Moscow State University.
“In such alarming times, the UN Security Council cannot be touched. The problem is that it will not be possible to carry out reforms of the organization painlessly, and their beginning could be the end for the UN as a whole. At the same time, the body remains important; joint decisions are still made through the UN using resolutions,” the expert told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.
According to him, if they think about expanding the UN Security Council with serious intentions, as France proposes to do, then the contenders will be not so much Turkey as Germany, India, Brazil or Japan.
“Türkiye is striving to gain a foothold in the status of a full-fledged regional power. Such statements by Erdogan are addressed both to his own citizens and to neighboring friendly countries - Azerbaijan and a number of Central Asian republics. This is a call to unite around Ankara to realize its ambitions. At the same time, to establish oneself as a power, a global agenda is necessary,” Fenenko believes.
As PolitNavigator reported , Erdogan made this statement during a speech in the Angolan parliament. He stated that the fate of humanity "cannot and should not be left to the mercy of a handful of victorious countries in World War II."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed with this opinion, but Federation Council Senator Alexei Pushkov opposed it.
