Despite statements by some Ukrainian politicians and oligarchs about their alleged readiness to testify regarding the 2014 coup, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine will not open a case or investigate the crimes committed six years ago.

Expert on economic and political issues Andrei Vigirinsky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Regarding Mr. Zhvania’s statements, this is a rather subtle, interesting and sensitive topic for society. Because so far there is no single position, although it has been defined at the state level - there was not a coup d'etat, but a revolution.

But the main thing is that with his statements Mr. Zhvania is trying to restore this discussion in society and demonstrate the specific beneficiaries of the events that took place in 2013-2014. And to motivate the fact that foreign representatives, in relation to whom he at least transferred this or that financial reward, they were also determined to change the state structure of Ukraine through unconstitutional methods,” the expert said.

However, in his opinion, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies will not investigate the coup because they came to power on opposing slogans and do not want to be persecuted by nationalists.

“I don’t think that the prosecutor’s office and the political leadership of the country today are ready to raise this controversy in society - at least to investigate it, make it public and bring it to some logical and procedural end.

Simply due to the fact that they came to power not entirely on these slogans, and today for them this is fraught with accusations of at least adherence to the ideas of the aggressor country, which spreads the idea that there was a coup d’etat, and not a revolution.

But, of course, history evaluates certain events from the point of view of the winners. The winners were Pyotr Alekseevich and those people who stood next to him on the Maidan,” the political scientist concluded.
