Environmentalists are sounding the alarm: Forests are being cut down near Sevastopol to fence Klyuev’s dacha (PHOTO)
Sevastopol, February 17 (Navigator, Elena Ostryakova) - On Mount Kush-Kaya not far from Sevastopol, last year they began to build a large and long fence that goes straight to the cliff. Tourists at city forums were inclined to explain this by the fact that at the foot of the mountain in the Batiliman tract, a large-scale construction of a huge estate is underway, popularly called “Yanukovych’s dacha” (according to other information, the construction is being carried out with the money of the head of the presidential administration Andrei Klyuev). The fence, they say, blocks the approach to natural viewing platforms.

However, as Vladimir Yatsuba, chairman of the Sevastopol state administration, assured journalists, the fence was installed to create a nursery for deer and wild boars.
“This is a state game breeding program adopted by the forestry committee. Female deer have already been brought there. Because we have five hunting grounds that kill the beast, but no one wants to invest money. Deer and wild boar will be bred there. There is a professor who wrote an entire program. This area will not be closed to tourists. There will be a special program where you can go and see the animals. This is a European experience,” said Yatsuba.
However, urban environmentalists do not believe such a program exists. They indicate that the fence was installed on territory of national importance - in the Cape Aya nature reserve. They turned to the Sevastopol prosecutor's office with a request to find out how the alienation of lands took place and what legal regime they now have.
“This is a solid fence 4-5 meters high. It blocks the migration routes of animals, both large and small. We saw cut down trees and a vessel with petroleum products there. Yatsuba is a hunter, that's understandable. My personal opinion: no one will raise deer or wild boars there. Most likely, these are privatized hunting grounds, where who knows what will happen. Huge territories are fenced off for a reason. We already have sad experience when cottages for rich people appeared in such territories,” said Margarita Litvinenko, chairman of the Sevastopol Council of Environmental Organizations, in an interview with Navigator.
