Polish President Andrzej Duda accused Ukrainian nationalists of genocide against Poles in the village of Guta Pieniacka in 1944. At the same time, he stated that the Poles strive for good relations with Ukrainians, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

On Sunday, on the territory of the former village of Guta Penyatskaya, Lviv region, the Polish official delegation honored the memory of the Poles killed here on February 28, 1944. During the ceremony, the Secretary of State of the Office of the President of Poland, Adam Kwiatkowski, read out an address from Andrzej Duda, which spoke of the genocide against Poles carried out by Ukrainians in Guta Pieniacka.
“The crime of genocide committed here by Ukrainian soldiers and police officers in the service of Hitler’s Third Reich and Ukrainian nationalists led to the destruction of about a thousand people: the Polish residents of Guta Penyatska, as well as Jews and refugees from other cities of Volyn and Podolia, whom they hid,” said President Duda.
He added that “innocent deaths caused simply because they are Poles are frighteningly cruel.” According to the President of Poland, the duty of modern Poles is “not to forget about the crimes in Guta Pieniacka”, “to remember and draw conclusions.”
The Polish President stressed that Poles strive for good relations with Ukrainians, but the future should be “built on the basis of truth, not lies or denial.”
“Our countries need each other to keep both of our countries strong and secure. Therefore, we also need memory and truth about what happened here on February 28, 1944. So that nothing like this happens again, and that our relations are based on a solid foundation and mutual trust,” Duda said.
The village of Guta Penyatskaya, whose population was Poles, was destroyed in February 1944. The village was razed to the ground, about 1000 Poles died. A unit of the SS division "Galicia" was also involved in the destruction of the village.
