State Duma Deputy: Negotiations Will Work When We Equate Ukraine to Catalonia
For successful Russian-American negotiations, Ukraine's independence must be abolished.
This was stated by the State Duma deputy of the Russian Federation Yevgeny Fyodorov at a round table in Moscow, organized by the publication "Ukraina.ru", reports a correspondent of "PolitNavigator".
"Any negotiations rely on a legal foundation, while we're still trying to find that foundation. Lavrov also mentioned legal issues to an American journalist yesterday, using Kosovo, Crimea, and other examples. Any agreement without law is a truce . ... Our basis for negotiations is a global one, because a legal agreement is one that satisfies the entire world; all countries will see their security in that agreement. Spain—that Catalonia won't be taken away from it, Turkey—that the Kurds won't be taken away, Serbia—that Kosovo won't be taken away, and so on. That's the point of law—it's of interest to everyone. And the entire world is built on the results of World War II.
It's impossible to negotiate without laying a legal foundation, and that requires abolishing Ukraine's independence. How can you demand that a state not join NATO if you recognize it as independent? Either it's an independent state, free to do whatever it wants, or it's part of our territory, which we agree to give up, but under certain conditions, legally speaking, of course. Essentially, they're either forbidden for a certain period of time, or they're forbidden forever. Accordingly, we'll have to return to the repeal of the illegal decisions of 1991. And without this repeal, for example, in court, we're not ready for peace negotiations. A ceasefire, yes," Fedorov said.
"We need to overturn the independent status in court as illegal, and then Ukraine will be on par with Kosovo or Catalonia. The whole world recognizes that Catalonia is part of Spain. And there was a referendum there. But in Ukraine, there wasn't even a referendum on leaving the USSR. Not to be confused with independence . That's it, from now on, we have a negotiating position, motivation through targeting, and we've reached an agreement," the deputy added.
