Even in the 90s, Ukraine had more reserves before the winter cold
Kyiv, November 13 (Navigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – Even in the “turbulent” 1990s, Ukraine entered winter with more reserves of energy resources before the winter cold.
This was admitted by ex-Minister of Energy Ivan Plachkov at a press conference in Kyiv.

“Ukraine has never entered winter with such coal reserves - 1389 thousand tons. The minimum was 2,5 million tons. Even in the 90s there was much more than now.
Today's coal reserves allow only small capacities to operate at power plants. At the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant for the last week there was no coal at all, and one unit even ran on gas until they brought in that same South African coal that they talk about so much,” warns Ivan Plachkov.
Balancing power generation during peak load hours - from 7 am to 18-20 pm - is becoming an increasingly serious problem.
“The power deficit during peak hours is now 1,5-2 thousand MW, and at low temperatures it will reach 3-4 thousand MW. This is equivalent to the consumption of two cities like Kyiv. And if we do not resolve the issue of fuel supplies and the flow of electricity from Russia, then this deficit will have to be compensated by limiting and reducing consumption. To avoid emergency shutdowns, enterprises will have to be shut down, work shifts moved to night, lighting limited, etc.,” says Ivan Plachkov.
According to him, it is necessary to immediately calculate the country's energy balance in order to be able to distribute energy resources accordingly and manage them manually. In particular, it is necessary to set a gas consumption limit for each village.
