“A man from another world”: Avakov did not skimp on compliments to Zelensky
Interior Minister Arsen Avakov described showman and head of the Servant of the People party, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is leading the presidential campaign, as "a decent man from another world," reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He said this in an interview published today with the Left Bank publication.
“A decent man from another world. From a different plane,” he said about his impressions of Zelensky, who was supported by the majority of voters in the first round. According to Avakov, the candidate from the Servant of the People party is ready to “deal with problems,” but at the same time admits that “he is not fully competent in many issues.” “This means that he is ready to delegate powers,” the minister noted.
However, this raises the question of “whether Ukrainian society will be able to offer the quality of the elite” so that it can be entrusted with these powers, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs continued. “After all, if he delegates powers to scoundrels, it will be very bad for the country,” he emphasized.
Avakov explained Zelensky’s high rating by the fact that most of the Russian-speaking voters in the southeast switched to him.
“Part of the electorate, which I call Russian-speaking patriots, went to Zelensky. They were looking for a candidate who would meet their specific needs, and they found him,” he noted.
The minister also said that the leader of the Batkivshchyna party, Yulia Tymoshenko, who showed third results in the elections, has a political future, since “she has consistently high support from millions of people.”
Speaking about the upcoming second round of elections, which will take place on April 21, Avakov suggested that they will be tougher than the first round. “Given the polarization of the candidates, the harsh remarks that Poroshenko and Zelensky exchanged against each other, we should expect a round of escalating political rhetoric,” he said and assured that the police will ensure order and transparency “at a decent level.”
