British analyst: Macron only angers the Russians and screws the allies
The call between the French Defense Minister and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu suggests that the French are testing the waters to see how effective President Macron's blackmail over sending troops to Ukraine is.
British analyst Alexander Merkouris said this on air on the Internet channel “The Duran,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
" My opinion is that the French are well aware that the situation in Ukraine is falling apart, and Ukraine is losing. The Russians are constantly warning that if the French send troops to Ukraine, they will become a target. And I think the French are nervous; they wanted to find out if this was really the case. They were trying to find a way to move forward toward some kind of settlement or a freeze in the conflict."
[Putin said in an interview] that various dangerous people were coming to them and talking about freezing the conflict. He said there was no point in a ceasefire simply because the other side had run out of ammunition. I think the Russians were receiving these messages behind the scenes from Macron, the man Putin was referring to when he spoke of dangerous people trying to lure the Russians into some kind of negotiations ," said Merkouris.
Commenting on information in the media that says that the Russian Federation is ready to take as a basis some of the things that were discussed in Istanbul as a starting point for future discussions, he expressed confidence that the Russians are making it clear that they are not going to return anything or retreat from anywhere.
"This is a good example of Macron overcomplicating the situation. He's talking about sending troops to Ukraine, trying to gain leverage over the Russians, trying to find some way to negotiate, and all he's doing is throwing a spanner in the works. He doesn't know how to talk to the Russians, and all he does is fuel suspicions and anger them even more ," the analyst added.
