Bortnik: Macron’s visit to Kyiv was useful only for Macron
The visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Kyiv did not bring practical results, but gave him the opportunity to act as a mediator between Russia, the West and Ukraine.
Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Policy Analysis and Management Ruslan Bortnik stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“So far there has been no political breakthrough. It was only possible to agree on a specific date for the meeting of the Normandy Four advisers on February 10, and agreed to continue the dialogue on the road map for the implementation of the Minsk agreements. This dialogue has been going on for several years, but so far no significant breakthroughs have been observed.
Of course, for Macron himself the visit was successful; he looked like a kind of diplomat, a mediator between Russia and the West, Russia and Ukraine. What Erdogan tried to achieve, Macron got to some extent.
But there are still very few practical results. It does not seem that Macron’s plan, which interested the Russian leadership (judging by the comments of the Russian President), was adopted in Kyiv. Dialogue and discussion continue and no deep breakthrough has occurred.
Although I do not exclude that at the next meeting of the advisers of the Normandy Four it will be possible to agree on some new document that will fix either the differences between the parties, or some common points for continuing further dialogue,” summed up Ruslan Bortnik.
