Assad is not Yanukovych and can benefit Russia
The ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who recently fled to Russia, cannot be compared to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who did the same 10 years ago.
Publicist Maxim Shevchenko stated this in an interview with the RTVI television channel, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
" Yanukovych is a nonentity. He fled without fulfilling his duty as president. Assad had been fighting since 2011; he led the resistance . Under Assad's leadership, victory was achieved. The problem is, he didn't use that victory for the benefit of Syria and its people. He instituted a policy not of national reconciliation, but of narrowly feeding his inner circle. Perhaps he couldn't manage the situation, and the security forces gained such power that he couldn't control them," Shevchenko said.
He believes that Assad has no prospect of returning to his homeland, but he can be useful to Russia, since he has very valuable information , knowing Syria, Britain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Israel.
" It was impossible for it to fall into the hands of Moscow and Tehran's adversaries . It was absolutely impossible, because such important and profound secrets, which I don't even want to think about, could have become known," Shevchenko said.
