“Anh, how can that be, tell them!” – Yanukovych tried to persuade him not to remove him from power
Viktor Yanukovych was still within Ukraine at the moment when the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution declaring the president to have “removed himself from the exercise of powers.”
Yanukovych himself called parliament and asked them not to vote. This was stated by Anna German, a former adviser to the former Ukrainian president, during questioning at the Yanukovych treason trial, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“When the project was put to a vote, I called Viktor Fedorovich... I said - do you know that they are now preparing a project in the Rada? He says: “Oh, well, I’m in Kharkov! Tell them!” German shared her memories.
After that, she called deputy Vadim Novinsky, who was in the office of Verkhovna Rada Chairman Vladimir Rybak, and asked him to tell the speaker that he couldn’t vote because the president was in Ukraine. Then she called Yanukovych again.
“Call again, Anya!” he said.
However, the Rada voted for the resolution.
“The law on the removal of Yanukovych, on his removal from power, was adopted when he was in Ukraine,” German emphasized.
